Real Life Takes Practice

Knowing what to do and feeling ready to do it are not always the same thing.

REAL In Action is CTWC’s flagship experiential program for transition-age youth and adults preparing for greater independence, employment, and adult life. It brings financial literacy, workplace readiness, self-advocacy, career exploration, decision-making, mentorship, and real-world practice into one connected learning experience.

The goal is not to hand someone a list of rules for adulthood. It is to give people room to learn, make decisions, ask questions, practice, reflect, and build confidence.

From Information to Application

Two young adults work together using a laptop and Braille materials.

Participants may already have heard lessons about budgeting, jobs, advocacy, or independent living. REAL In Action closes the distance between hearing the lesson and using it.

Participants learn through instruction, scenario-based learning, simulations, group discussion, mentoring, speakers, and practical decision-making. They work through situations that feel closer to real life because the choices belong to them.

What Participants May Work On

  • Financial literacy and everyday money decisions
  • Employment readiness and understanding the world of work
  • Career exploration and thinking beyond a limited set of job possibilities
  • Self-advocacy and communicating needs
  • Confidence and decision-making
  • Disability rights and responsibilities
  • Community participation and relationships
  • Practical problem-solving
  • Learning when and how to ask for support

The REAL Experience

One of the ideas at the heart of REAL In Action is that choices become more meaningful when there is something to decide.

Scenario stations and simulations place participants in situations involving housing, employment, banking, education, utilities, health, everyday essentials, and other parts of adult life. The proprietary REAL In Action App carries those experiences into one connected educational tool. Built specifically for the program, the app lets participants work through decisions and see how one choice can affect the next.

The app does not replace mentorship, discussion, instruction, reflection, or human interaction. It strengthens them by giving participants, mentors, and instructors a shared place to follow decisions, explore consequences, and connect each lesson to the larger experience.

For Families

Most Pre-Employment Transition Services and adult VR programs are built around the participant. That focus matters, but parents and family members are often left to sort through their own questions about resources, rights, risk, independence, changing expectations, and when to step in or step back.

The REAL In Action Parent & Family Track runs alongside participant programming. Families learn about resources, disability rights, service systems, and practical ways to encourage problem-solving and independent decision-making without taking over. Participants build skills while families build a stronger support approach, so everyone can work toward the same goal: a person with room to grow, make choices, recover from mistakes, and define independence on their own terms.

For VR Agencies, Schools, and Transition Professionals

REAL In Action complements—not replaces—the transition and rehabilitation services agencies and schools already provide.

Built for both Pre-ETS and adult VR programming, REAL In Action gives agencies and schools a structured way to help participants apply skills, engage with peers and mentors, practice decision-making, and connect instruction to situations beyond the classroom.

CTWC offers flexible delivery models shaped around the audience, contract, location, and program format while preserving the connected REAL In Action experience.

More Than a One-Time Event

REAL In Action is a connected program model. Direct instruction, experiential learning, mentorship, the proprietary app, the Parent & Family Track, and flexible delivery formats reinforce one another throughout the experience.

Together, these pieces make REAL In Action more than a workshop or simulation. It is a one-of-a-kind CTWC learning experience built to help people practice adult life, not simply prepare for it on paper.
